Palliative Care In-Patient

Palliative care is the specialized coordinated care and support of people with a progressive life limiting illness. Maintenance of dignity, quality of life, consultation in decision making and expert symptom control are key components in the care provided.

MAKING A REFERRAL: (08) 9340 6300

In 2006 Bethesda Hospital joined the Western Australian palliative care community when it opened a 13 bed palliative care unit, which in 2010 expanded to a 24 bed unit.
The unit is a specialized palliative care service which provides inpatient care for both insured and non insured patients.

Care is provided by an expert team of palliative care clinicians including a palliative care consultant doctor and full time registrar, social worker, occupational therapist, chaplain, and nurses.

We are able to offer admission for:

Symptom Control
Poorly controlled symptoms are managed by the specialist inter-disciplinary team approach, with a view to maximising the quality of life and returning the patient to their usual environment (home, nursing home or hostel) with appropriate support strategies.
Respite Care
Respite admission may be offered to provide a short break for home carers on an ad hoc or planned basis with a firm date of discharge mutually agreed upon. Should the patients condition deteriorate during a respite admission the length of stay will be re- assessed.
Terminal Care
Some patients choose to die in the Palliative Care Unit or the complexity of their care may determine that inpatient terminal care is required.

Further Information

The unit has 24 single rooms rooms, all have en suite bathrooms, and many have views of the Swan River. Television and phone for local calls are provided free of charge. If required, next of kin can stay overnight in the patients room. Food at Bethesda is freshly prepared and cooked in our kitchen by the chef, with a full cooked breakfast available if the patient wishes.
